About

Praised for their singing sound and harmonious interplay, the Castello Consort explores music from the renaissance and early baroque. They draw inspiration from historical sources and instruments, bringing early music into a contemporary context. In collaboration with living composers, they explore the limits of  historical instruments. In programs focused solely on early music, the Castello Consort is known for its quest to discover a unique sound for each repertoire, where the latest musicological research meets a fresh and exciting sound world that challenges both the musicians and the listeners.

For their debut CD ‘Fantastissimus’ (★★★★ NRC), the ensemble worked together with composer Martijn Padding. Inspired by his seventeenth-century colleagues, he wrote a collection of new music for the Castello Consort: sometimes conceptual, sometimes theatrical, sometimes very close to improvisation, but always bold and unconventional.

With the generous help of various foundations and a crowdfunding, the ensemble also initiated the building of a transportable organ, based on historical examples from seventeenth-century Italy. In 2020 the Reil organ was premiered during a live radio broadcast on the Dutch radio. The many registers and extended mean tone tuning offer a whole new range of expressions and form an important part of the ensemble’s sound.

The ensemble has been a regular guest in festivals and concert series all over Europe, including the Utrecht Early Music Festival (NL), the Radovljica Festival (SI), the International Händel Festival in Göttingen (DE), the Beverley Early Music Festival (UK), the Festival d’Ambronay (FR), and the Festival Barocco è il Mondo (IT). In 2017 the ensemble was selected for the prestigious Eeemerging-programme, a  European initiative for young, rising ensembles in the early music scene. In 2026 the ensemble will play their debut at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam (NL).

Matthijs van der Moolen

Founder of the ensemble Matthijs loves playing chamber music, both early and contemporary. In 2025 his solo album Ricercati was released with the label Navis Classics, containing early music by Virgiliano and Marais, and the premieres of two new works that Martijn Padding composed for him.

He regularly teaches workshops and masterclasses at summer courses and conservatories, for instance as guest lecturer for the summer course ‘Between Prague and Vienna’ in Czechia. Currently, he is working on his PhD on The Trombone in Seventeenth-Century France, England, and The Low Countries.
